Metigoshe Morgans

Located in the beautiful Turtle Mountains of northern North Dakota.

History of Metigoshe Morgans

I have been hooked on Morgans since I was first introduced in 1987. I have owned horses since
1980, buying my first Morgan in 1988. The METIGOSHE name was founded in 1999, and  currently I have three Morgans: Prairie Hill  Peaches, Roycan's Sir Alex and Corizon de Oro.

Metigoshe (Met-a-go-she) is a Native American name that means clear lake surrounded by many trees.
We have a summer cabin at Lake Metigoshe
which is only 6 miles from our home here in the
 Turtle Mountains of North
Dakota. We are located just south of the Canadian border on 80 acres.

I earned my Associates in Applied Science degree in Equine Science from the University of Minnesota - Crookston in 1988. When I'm not busy with my Morgans, I'm with my family: my hubby Mark (a third generation Chiropractor) and our four kids, Marissa (17), Logan (14), Braden (12) and Nolan (10). We also have some other furry critters that reside here; Lola our Golden Retriever cross dog and cats: Marie, Cinders, Lily and Annabelle.

When I have any spare time left over I have a small at-home jewelry business selling a variety of items that are made from Emerald Obsidianite. This green gemstone comes from the  Mt. Saint Helen's volcano in WA.

My first Morgan was Prairie Hill Peaches a chestnut mare I bought  as a 2 yr old back in 1988.  She as well as her dam and sire are native to North Dakota. She is turning 23 years old this year and has a condition called Insulin Resistance.  It is similar to human Type II diabetes - only the glucose stays normal but insulin is very elevated.  This is controlled through diet and she lives in a dry lot from March through November as she cannot eat any green grass, grains or treats.  Main symptoms are founder and obesity so their diets must be controlled very tightly.  But in doing so she returned to being sound without the use of shoes and has lived many more years in a productive lifestyle.  2009 marks the 6th year of dealing with this condition.  With the help of the wonderful people on the Equine Cushings/IR site on yahoo she will hopefully have many more healthy years ahead of her. Their expertise and knowledge have helped me guide her back to health and complete soundness.

My next Morgan is Roycan's Sir Alex.  He is a Canadian bred brown Morgan gelding.  He is much bigger than both parents at a solid 15.2 hands.  He is coming 15 and I have had him since he was 3.  He has turned out to be a gentle soul and the mount that I put my daughter on and even my very green husband.  I love that about him - might not have been ridden for months - but no trouble pulling him out of the pasture and throwing a saddle on without worries.

And my newest addition- Corizon de Oro - meaning *heart of gold*.  He is a coming 8 year old buckskin Morgan gelding out of California.  I purchased him as a coming 3 year old thinking my mare Peaches would never be ridden again due to her chronic laminitis. (I was just learning about IR at that time)  He is the funny guy around here and keeps me on his toes with his pranks and character.  His gorgeous coloring always attracts attention as well.  I had always wanted a buckskin - remembering all those times watching *Marshall Dillion* on Gunsmoke as a child.

I raised two foals from my mare Peaches - Metigoshe Marquessa who was born in 1999 and now resides with a dear friend in Idaho and Metigoshe Princess Laila, born in 2001, who resides in the Los Angeles area in CA. Personally, I prefer the hunt, sport horse and old western types but love a good Morgan in any discipline. I love the personality that Morgans convey and love the curvy and upheaded features they portray.

I did not breed or raise any more foals after those two.  I loved having the babies but  I also feel there
are so many horses (and Morgans)
that are in need of new homes so I didn't need to add to that market crisis.  Expecially bad this past year with the rising costs of fuel and areas of drought that have caused hay and
feed prices to sky-rocket.

I don't get a lot of time to ride as my kids aren't horse oreinted and have other things on their agendas -
and I mostly enjoy trailriding, occasional
clinics and parades at this point in my life.

I have been very active in our North Dakota Morgan Horse club for nearly 20 years - currently acting as the newsletter editor.  I have had the role as President, VP, Secretary/Treasurer in the past and have been on many committees over the years.  I have also done this newsletter off and on and probably have done it at least 8 different years.  I keep coming back so I must enjoy it.

Please be sure to take a moment and look at a few pictures I have here, and allow me the
opportunity to share a part of my life and loves with
you.

     Morganly yours,
     Melanie and gang
